The spiral bands dance circles around an empty core. Vivid greens, oranges and specks of red filll the map in front of me. I watch as together these blobs of color march to the top left of the frame. Soon they will no longer hide the sea blue filling, but shift their way on top of the dull brown mass. Straight black lines stretch across the higher brown. Below a more random, jagged nature composes these dark streaks. Intersecting one from the other, a bold and familiar line of particular importance runs northwest, drains to the southeast. If the track carries more north than east, 300 million will be drawn to attention. 'No, it's not as bad as her, but do still watch'. If she lowers herself below the great divider, more pressing issues will be reported. A meager 50 mile difference will sell the show. I first heard the author and comedian David Sedaris from the radio show This American Life. He spoke of an incident during his regular visits to France where two American tourists, assuming he spoke no English, loudly proclaimed in their native tongue how David was a stinky French thief. For ten minutes he described the scene as it played out, the two tourists reciting the rudest remarks, somehow forgetting that English is a language even most native-born Frenchmen know. The story was a delight to listen to, one that makes you want to retell it to everyone, even though there's no possible way you could recreate it. You finally end up telling people, "Just download episode 173 of This American Life and it's the final act, around the 40 minute mark" but that does even less …
